Church of the Brethren Annual Conference
July 12 – July 16
Richmond, Virginia
“Annual Conference exists to unite, strengthen and equip the Church of the Brethren to follow
Jesus”.
Let us pray for all that attend Annual Conference to reunite, worship, enjoy, learn, grow, listen
and discern how to better follow Christ.
Hello Friends,
Tami and I have been looking forward to Annual Conference this year. With it being the
Brethren’s 300th anniversary, it seems appropriate to commemorate this great moment as the
Church of the Brethren and the Brethren Church join together in Richmond, Virginia for worship
services and other events. This will be the first time that the Church of the Brethren and the
Brethren Church will be at the same conference since the 1880’s when they were known as
German Baptist Brethren and Progressive Brethren.
This is an exciting time for Tami and I because we both were once members of the
Brethren Church. As a matter of fact, Tami grew up in the Brethren Church and the beginning of
my faith journey started in a Brethren Church when I was sixteen.
As teenagers, Tami and I were both quite active with the Brethren Church youth
ministries on a national level. Tami served on Crusader teams for two summers. You may be
wondering what a Crusader Team is? Every summer the Brethren Church sends out their young
people in teams to visit and minister to Brethren Churches, camps. There are music teams and
teams that help churches with Vacation Bible School. Crusaders have also gone and assisted
with missionaries in Latin America and other regions of our world. It was through the Crusader
program that Tami and I met in 1979 while I was serving as an Interim Minister at Mt. Olive
Brethren Church outside Harrisonburg, Virginia.
For me, as a youth, while I chose not to participate in the Crusader Program, I instead
served on a District and National level with the youth. I was President of the Southeast District
Conference Youth and served on the National Youth Cabinet. It was through such witnesses of
BYC (Brethren Youth Crusader) and my local congregation in Washington, D.C. that I was
called to the ministry.
These youth activities helped to develop relationships that we treasure today. Over time
some of those relationships have faded as we moved on to serve the Church of the Brethren.
But now, for the first time, Tami and I will have the opportunity to see our two church families
become one (even if it’s just for a week).Of course, who knows? God works great miracles and
maybe it will be time to bring the two churches back together.
I can tell you one thing. The Brethren Church and the Church of the Brethren would
become a stronger presence if that ever could happen. I share that opinion with you from a
personal level…because both the Brethren and the Church of the Brethren have had and
continue to have a great influence in our lives and in the life of our family.
Oh well…I can’t think too far ahead. All I can tell you is that Tami and I look forward to
seeing all of our friends…old and new at Annual Conference in July.
Until Next Time,
Pastor Larry

THANK YOU FOR BEING THE LOVING PERSON YOU ARE. A few weeks ago, during a time of
great pain and being prepared for emergency surgery, I made a phone call to a dear sister in
the Lord. From that one phone call, you learned of my situation and showed me you cared. You
always remain dear in my heart; thank you for the prayers, the beautiful prayer shawl, the cards,
the visits and phone calls. Love for you always, your sister in the
Lord, Jeanne Lamb.
Thanks for being a teaching church has been received from Tara Hornbacker, professor at
Bethany Theological Seminary. Prince of Peace provided the required year of training in
ministry formation for Sandy Jenkins. Gratitude goes to Pastor Larry and to the teaching
committee which consisted of Ann Anderson, Barb Campbell, Tracy Downs, Josh Flory Steury,
Bob Tyndall and Mike Rose.

Newsletter Schedule
There will only be one newsletter for July and August, so if you have any items that you wish to
place in the newsletter, please make note of the deadlines. The deadline for the July newsletter
will be Sunday, July 20, and the August newsletter the deadline will be Sunday August 17. In
September, we will resume the newsletter every 2 weeks.
What a wonderful week we had at Vacation Bible School!!! 63 children and 35 adults were
here to discover the miraculous power of Jesus. It’s hard to know where to start and how to
explain the rush of adrenalin that occurs when you see all the children (and adults), stand up
and sing about the power of Jesus.
I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the congregation for your support, pray fully,
emotionally, physically, and financially. Without you, we could not undertake this kind of project
every year. A special thanks to the Christian Education Commission, who helps in every way
possible in making the vision come alive.
Already we are looking to next year, when the theme will be Crocodile Dock, Where
Fearless Kids Shine God’s Light. In preparation for next year we will again hold several fund
raisers. And yes, one of the fundraisers will be a garage sale. So start boxing up those
unwanted or no longer needed items and we will gladly pick them up and store them until next
year.
Blessings to you all, Joy Kemmerer, Christian Ed. Chair
